Biometric Identification

Today, several methods such as fingerprint, iris, retina, voice, face etc. are used for biometric identification. Each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages. In order to select the most appropriate system, one should carefully examine criterions like reliability, price, flexibility and necessity to physical contact with the device. Besides fingerprint identification which is widely used, usage of face identification is also increasing rapidly. Face identification is used in access control systems in buildings, computer/network resources, bank accounts and personnel tracking systems of enterprises.

Most of these applications can operate with computers as well as embedded in mobile systems (mobile phones, computers etc.) or gates and entrances with low costs. Face identification systems have many advantages such as speed and reliability besides their capability of identifying multiple faces at a time and making not only verification but also identification. Further, it is more practical compared to fingerprint identification systems since it does not require physical contact with devices. However, some systems require higher security and we have combined systems using both face and fingerprint identifications besides multi-biometric identification systems. Multi-biometric systems are more secure and reliable. Moreover, verification is faster with multi-biometric systems in applications with huge databases.
